Skip Etiquette 101: What You Need to Know Before You Hire

When hiring a skip from BSH Recycling, a little skip etiquette goes a long way. Whether you’re tackling a home renovation, landscaping your garden, or just having a clear-out, understanding the dos and don’ts of skip usage ensures your project runs smoothly — and safely.

What Can Go in a Skip?

For mixed waste skips, we accept:

    • Bricks, rubble, soil, aggregates, concrete

    • Timber and metals

    • Plastic, paper, cardboard

    • Furniture and general waste (excluding sofas and cushions)

    • Green waste and garden debris

This covers most common waste types for household projects and garden work.

What Can’t Go in a Skip?

Certain items are either hazardous or require specialist disposal:

    • Asbestos (ask us about our asbestos disposal service)

    • Plasterboard, paint or paint tins

    • Fridges or freezer units

    • Glass bottles or sheet glass

    • Batteries, oils, solvents, lubricants

    • Tyres, VDU’s, or other electrical equipment

    • Sofas and cushions

    • Anything flammable or toxic

Not sure? Give us a call before placing items that may be questionable — we’re always happy to help.

📏 Choosing the Right Skip Size

From 2 yard to 40 yard skips, selecting the correct size helps you avoid overfilling, or paying for space you don’t need. If in doubt, feel free to visit our Bourne or Peterborough depots to view sizes in person.  As a guide, our most popular skip size is 8 cubic yards. If you’re still not sure, our team can advise based on your project type and expected waste.

    🛑 Level Loads Only, Please

All waste must remain within the top edges of the skip, forming a level load. Overloaded skips pose safety risks and cannot be collected. It’s the hirer’s responsibility to remove excess waste before collection.

    🚧 Do I Need a Permit?

If your skip will be placed on a public road, a permit from the local authority is required. No need to worry — we can arrange this on your behalf. There is an additional charge for a permit which is dependent on your local authority. Just let us know when you book.

♻️ What Happens to Your Waste?

All collected waste is processed at our Bourne and Peterborough Waste Transfer Stations. We’ve heavily invested in modern plant, equipment and training to maximise recycling and reduce landfill.

    Standard Hire Terms

Our skip hire is based on a standard 7-day rental, but if you need longer, speak to our team and they’ll be happy to help.
